With the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NRCB) data finding the highest number of Bangladeshi prisoners in West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has now got a good way of pushing for implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.

According to the NRCB 2017 report, West Bengal has around 61.9 per cent of foreign convicts in the country.

“The highest number of foreign convicts in India are from Bangladesh. With 1,403 Bangladeshi convicts in Indian prisons, West Bengal alone has 1,284 prisoners from that country,” the report added.

As per reports, the saffron party is now planning to use the data during its campaign against the state government, after the festive season.

The BJP claimed that the NRCB 2017 data proves that it is of the utmost necessity to implement NRC in West Bengal.

According to the saffron party, the Trinamool Congress party has turned the state into “a safe house for infiltrators and jihadis”.

It may be mentioned that West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee had said that she will not allow the implementation of NRC in the state.

While addressing a meeting of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) affiliated trade union Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC) last month, Banerjee claimed that NRC exercise was carried out in Assam due to the Assam Accord but it will not be conducted anywhere else in the country.
