Senior Congress leader and former union minister Kapil Sibal has said that Courts must take suo motu cognizance of the ‘brutality’ in Assam.

Kapil Sibal said this while speaking about the clashes between police and alleged encroachers in Assam that resulted in death of two persons and injuries to 20.

“An enquiry is no answer. The court needs to act suo motu,” Kapil Sibal said.

Clashes had break out between locals and police in Sipajhar-Dholpur area, after officials of the Darrang district administration reached the area for an eviction drive on Thursday.

“Barbaric images of brutality seen on social media against those resisting eviction have shaken me,” Kapil Sibal said.

The senior Congress leader also questioned the silence maintained by the central government over the incident.

“The silence of our government has disheartened me,” Sibal added.

Notably, the Assam government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the clashes that broke out in Assam’s Sipajhar on Thursday during an eviction drive.
