After the expiry of six-month timeline to frame rules for implementing controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the Subordinate Legislation committee of Lok Sabha will seek response from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) over the lapse early next month.

The committee headed by YSR (Congress) MP Raghu Ramakrishna Raju is scheduled to meet officials from MHA on August 4 in this regard.

After the Act was passed in the Parliament on December 11, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the Act on December 12 and later MHA issued a notification.

Significantly, the timeline of the notification expired last month.

As per rules, the government needs to make rules over an Act for its implementation within six months of the issuance of a notification.

However, sources said, the subordinate committee may create issues for the government in seeking extension on timeline for making rules following the fact that the ruling party does not have the majority in the committee.

As per the Act, people belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, who entered India before 2014 following the religious persecutions will get Indian citizenship.

The Act triggered huge protests in Northeast especially in Assam with several students’ organizations and political parties accusing the BJP for getting the CAA passed “only for political gains.”
