With cyclone Yass likely to affect the Northeast, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday took stock of preparedness in the States of Assam, Meghalaya and Sikkim.
Cyclone Yaas is likely to affect the three Northeast States of Assam, Meghalaya and Sikkim on May 26 and 27.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted: “Cyclone YAAS is likely to affect the region on 26-27 May. Hon’ble UHM @AmitShah called and enquired about preparedness of Assam, Sikkim and Meghalaya. Informed that emergency services have been pressed into action. Amit Shah also reviewed preparation for Cyclone Yaas with Chief Ministers of West Bengal, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
Amit Shah reviewed the preparations for Cyclone Yaas including the evacuation of people on the high seas as well as in vulnerable coastal areas.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said that the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into cyclonic storm ‘Yaas’.
As per the latest bulletin by the IMD, cyclonic storm Yass is moving north-northwestwards with a speed of about 07 kmph for the past 6 hours.
Cyclonic storm Yaas is very likely to make landfall near Balasore in north Odisha with a speed of 155 kmph to 165 kmph, gusting to 185 kmph, around noon on May 26, the Met department said on Monday.
