The COVID-19 situation in Assam is becoming alarming. 

This was stated by Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday. 

Himanta Biswa Sarma made this statement after visiting the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH). 

Himanta Biswa Sarma took stock of the preparedness at the GMCH. 

He also held discussions with the faculty and Assam Principal Secretary for Health Samir Sinha on “scaling up of ICU and Hospital beds”. 

“Visited GMCH and held a meet with faculty and Principal Secretary Health to discuss scaling up of ICU and Hospital beds. With about 5000 COVID-19 cases being reported every day, situation in Assam is becoming a little alarming. However, we’re prepared,” said Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Notably, with the COVID-19 situation deteriorating in Assam, the State Government has issued a fresh set of SOPs in a bid to curb the rising menace of COVID-19. 

As per the new set of SOPs, issued by the Assam Government, all shops and business establishments are to close by 2pm.  

Moreover, night curfew will also be enforced in the State from 6pm. 

Moreover, “city buses, intra-district, inter-district and inter-state buses will operate will one driver and two passengers maintaining social distancing”. 

“All offices both private and Government shall shut down at 2pm on all days,” the fresh SOP read.

“Except officers, only 50% employees can work from office,” the SOP added. 

The fresh SOPs will come into force from 5 in the morning of May 5. 

The Assam Government had to bring in more stricter measures in place owing to rising COVID-19 positive cases in the State.
