The inhabitants of the quarters of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G) have opposed the state government’s move to convert the guest house complexes into COVID-19 quarantine centres.
“Children and elderly persons reside on the campus. Converting it into quarantine centres would be disastrous,” a resident faculty seeking anonymity said.,
“The campus has a population of over 3,000 people and this includes teachers and faculty members, their parents, foreign students and others,” the faculty added.
“The move to convert the two guest house complexes into COVID-19 quarantine centres has put our lives in danger,” he further said.
“The residents fear that the move might infect the entire campus,” the faculty added
He further alleged that the decision was taken hurriedly and no ground check was carried out.
” Senior citizens, children, students are at high risk now on the campus,” he further said.
The Kamrup district administration on Friday converted the two guest houses of the institute into quarantine centres.
“The number of positive COVID-19 cases has been increasing in the last few days because of the large inflow of people from outside,” the Kamrup (M) district administration said in a statement.
“Hence, a large number of quarantine spaces are needed for accommodating them,” the administration added.
The order further said that the two IIT-G guest house complexes would be under the direct control Kamrup (M) district authority until further notice.
