The Congress has dared the BJP to seek votes in Assam by promising implementation of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
This challenge from the Congress party to the BJP comes just a day after the saffron party promised implementation of CAA in its manifesto for the West Bengal elections.
The Congress challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to seek votes in Assam by promising implementation of the CAA.
“Let the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister promise in Assam that they would implement CAA in the first cabinet meeting of the new government as they have promised in West Bengal,” Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said.
“The CAA is a divisive piece of legislation and is a threat to identity and culture of the Assamese people,” added Surjewala.
“The Congress party is giving a guarantee to the people of Assam that the Congress would bring in a law that would nullify CAA implementation, if elected back to power,” Surjewala said.

The BJP in its manifesto for the West Bengal elections has announced that it will implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Notably, implementation of the CAA has been vehemently opposed by various organisations in Assam and opposition parties including the Congress.

Earlier on Sunday, seeking a clarification from the BJP, Assam Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi has asked the saffron party to clarify its stand on CAA implementation in Assam.
“The BJP has promised implementation of CAA in its manifesto in West Bengal. Can the BJP please clarify whether they plan to implement CAA in Bengal but not in Assam? In other words, do they agree with the Congress’s Guarantee of a law that would nullify CAA in Assam?” Gaurav Gogoi asked.
