The prime accused of a cash-for-job scam in Assam, Dr Ajanta Hazarika of Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH) was remanded to 5-day police custody on Tuesday in connection with a case (No.2150/20) registered in Dibrugarh police station.

Dibrugarh police sought 7 days’ custody of the accused.

The court at Dibrugarh granted a 5-day police remand to interrogate her.

Talking to reporters, Dibrugarh additional superintendent of police (headquarters) Padmanav Baruah said, “Dr Hazarika will be under police remand for five days.”

“On Monday, she surrendered before the Dibrugarh CJM court. After a preliminary investigation, we have got enough evidence against her in connection with the case. She had been absconding for 21 days and took refuge in Guwahati.”

Baruah said, “In the connection with the case we have arrested her husband, Simanta Jyoti Hazarika. We have summoned her but she didn’t come to the police station and after that for investigation, our team went to Guwahati and conducted raids there.”

She had been absconding for the last 21 days after a case was filed against her in Dibrugarh PS under sections 120B/420/409/406/506 of the Indian Panel Code (IPC).

The case was filed on December 7, 2020.

In the FIR, the complaint, Amol Nath alleged that Dr Hazarika had taken about Rs 22 lakh from three job aspirants from Dibrugarh with a promise to provide jobs in the Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR).

Dr Hazarika had been absconding since then.

The two other victims, namely Kishore Deb and Ajay Dutta Biswas, also recorded their statements in Dibrugarh CJM court recently in connection with the cash-for-job scam in the NFR.

The driver of Dr Ajanta Hazarika, Bhola Tiwari also recorded his statement in the court.

It has been alleged that Dr Hazarika had taken money from Amol Nath and the two other complainants promising them government jobs in the NFR.

Nath claimed he had transferred half of the amount to the bank accounts of one Rajeev Pasashar in Six Mile, Guwahati.
