The Mizoram boundary commission has stated that border row with Assam can be resolved only on the basis of the 1875 notification under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) of 1873.
This was stated by the Mizoram boundary commission on Friday following its first meeting after being constituted recently.
Disagreements in regards to the inter-state border with Assam started when Mizoram declared that it does not accept the present boundary with Assam as was demarcated in 1933.
Mizoram says that the inner line of the Inner Line Reserved Forest as described in the 1875 notification under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) of 1873 should be the basis for demarcation of the inter-state border with Assam.

In 1875, British had determined the boundary between Assam’s Cachar and Mizoram, which was then known as Lushai Hills. Both the areas were parts of Greater Assam then.
Then again in 1933, the British demarcated the Northeast into separate districts: Lushai Hills (Mizoram), Cachar (Assam) and present Manipur.
Mizoram was carved out of Assam in 1972 and was made a Union Territory. Later in 1987 it was granted statehood.
Mizoram has been claiming, time and again, that its borders with Assam should be determined as per the 1875 notification and not according to the 1933 demarcation.
