The Assam government has appointed IPS officer Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta as the state’s DGP In-charge.
Mahanta is currently serving as the special director general of police (border), Assam.
Mahanta, an IPS officer of 1988 batch of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, will look after the duties of the director general of police (DGP), Assam in addition to his existing duties until posting of a regular DGP as Kuladhar Saikia’s term as Assam Police chief ends on Saturday.
An order was issued by Kumar Sanjay Krishna, additional chief secretary to the home & political department, Assam, on Friday, confirming the appointment of Mahanta as the state’s DGP In-charge.
According to media reports, the Assam government earlier sent a list of senior IPS officers’ names to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for selection as the DGP of the state.
The names of those IPS officers include Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, AK Sinha Kashyap, KB Singh Deu, BK Mishra and Mukesh Agarwal.
Earlier, it was reported that Tapan Deka, an IPS officer of 1988 batch of Himachal cadre, who spent the better part of his career in the Intelligence Bureau, would take over as the next director general of Assam Police.

However, keeping aside all speculations, Assam government has chosen Mahanta to take charge of the Assam Police chief.
However, the UPSC will take the final decision regarding appointment of a regular DGP in Assam.
Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta is also a fimmaker who directed an award-winning Assamese short film ‘Yugadrashta: The Visionary’.
The film, based on the life of reformer and freedom fighter Pitambar Deva Goswami starring Moon Borkotoky, was produced by Swapnali Mahanta.
