The affected people of Baghjan oilwell blowout staged a protest near Tinsukia deputy commissioner office seeking compensation entered the fifth day on Friday.
It is a ‘symbolic protest, in which the villagers have been camping in makeshift tents near the Tinsukia deputy commissioner office since Monday to press for their demand.
Satyajit Moran, president of Baghjan Gaon Milanjyoti Yuba Sangha said, “Our demand has not been fulfilled.”
“We are demanding compensation for the affected people, till date the Tinsukia district administration has not given any compensation to the people,” he said.
“If our demand will not be fulfilled within a week then we would launch a massive protest against OIL and stop all ongoing work at Baghjan,” he added.
The Baghjan blowout incident occurred on May 27 and after that, the entire Baghjan and its surrounding areas were adversely affected.
“The NGT had ordered OIL to give compensation according to the categories. We need compensation in category I and II,” Moran further said.
“For category-I and II Rs 25 lakh and Rs 10 lakh respectively should be given,” he added.
The villagers have been annoyed with the lackadaisical attitude of Tinsukia district administration.
“Our house was damaged in the fire and we have lost our properties but even after three months, we have not got any compensation,” said a villager.
“We are living in a relief camp with my family in a tough condition. We cannot go to our house because it has been badly damaged in the fire,” he added.
