Tension continues to prevail in the Narayanpur area under Lakhimpur district on Tuesday over the murder of a mother-daughter duo on Sunday.

On Tuesday, thousands of women in Narayanpur blocked the NH-15 at the Narayanpur Tiniali demanding justice for the murdered mother-daughter duo.

The women demonstrated with slogans demanding exemplary punishment to the perpetrators of the crime and to ensure the safety and security of women and girls in society.

They also submitted three memorandums to the revenue circle officer of Narayanpur, who visited the demonstrating site.

On Sunday morning, Manju Phukan (40) and her daughter, Prashtuti (13) were found murdered in Jalukkota village of Merbeel area under Narayapur police station.

Following the discovery of the bodies, the villagers gathered in the victim’s house and demonstrated against the murder.

The villagers alleged that one Dinaram Phukan (Pero), the brother-in-law of the murdered woman, had killed the duo.

They also alleged that Dinaram had been intimidating the widowed woman since long over matters related to property.

The infuriated villagers also confronted the police in taking possession of the bodies for post-mortem.

Police escorted the murder accused from the villagers and took him and his family in their possession.

In the late evening when the bodies were returned after post-mortem, the villagers created ruckus outside the house of Dinaram Phukan and tried to cremate the bodies in the front yard. They also scuffled with the police to make a forced entry inside the house of the accused.

To this, the police used baton-charge and finally fired to the air to disperse the mob. Prohibitory order under Section 144 of CrPC was also clamped in that area.

The angry villagers also blocked the road in the village and demanded justice to the murdered mother-daughter duo on Monday.
