DIBRUGARH: Another supporter of Waris Punjab De was transferred from Dibrugarh central jail to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) for medical evaluation and treatment following a deterioration in health due to a hunger strike.

According to sources, Waris Punjab De leader Amritpal Singh and nine of his associates, detained under the National Security Act (NSA), have been on an indefinite hunger strike since February 17, protesting their imprisonment at the Dibrugarh central jail in Assam.

Basant Singh was taken to AMCH on Thursday (March 07) after his health deteriorated due to the hunger strike.

Earlier, two other associates of Amrit Pal Singh, Kulwant Singh and Gurmeet Singh, were admitted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) ICU on Wednesday (March 06) due to their deteriorating health conditions.

Kulwant Singh was admitted to AMCH on March 05 night after experiencing epilepsy symptoms.

“Their health condition is stable, and they have no serious issues. They are suffering from weakness. We learned that they are on a hunger strike, which has led to their health deterioration. They are currently on a liquid diet,” stated an official from AMCH.

On March 01, Gurpatwant Singh Pannu of the separatist Sikh for Justice organisation demanded the relocation of Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh and his associates from Dibrugarh jail to Amritsar jail, threatening dire consequences otherwise.

Pannu warned Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to transfer Amritpal and his aides to Punjab, or else the organization would file a complaint with the United Nations.

He noted that Singh and the other detainees are on an indefinite hunger strike.
