Digboi: Digboi in Assam’s Tinsukia district is facing a concerning rise in alleged unauthorized and unregulated pathology labs and blood sample collection centres.
A two-day investigation by journalists revealed a disturbing lack of compliance with health standards and qualifications.
Out of a dozen collection centres identified, only two maintained proper hygiene standards, including handwashing facilities and clean toilets. Most lacked proper waste management plans.
Almost all the privately run centres affiliated with outside labs lacked crucial documents like technician certifications, trade licenses, and amenity provisions for patients.
One doctor requested to halt the investigation, fearing media exposure and the potential closure of these “petty centres” despite their shortcomings. Another doctor, who privately attends patients in a centre with a collection facility, expressed confidence in avoiding consequences.
A pharmacy-based centre couldn’t produce any supporting documents but offered to obtain them “very soon.”
Perhaps most concerning is the apparent collusion between doctors and these centers. Technicians anonymously reported offering doctors 25-30% commission for recommending their labs and tests.
The ease of obtaining trade licenses without proper documentation raises further concerns.
A technician’s document listed a fictitious address, highlighting the lack of stringent verification.
While the Joint Director of Tinsukia acknowledged the non-compliance and promised action, the government’s overall response seems sluggish. Data collection has begun, but no immediate crackdown appears imminent.
A qualified doctor, who wished to remain anonymous, emphasized the illegality of labs run by unqualified personnel and pathologists remotely signing reports.
They called for stricter enforcement against both practices.
