waste management in Dibrugarh

Union minister of state for petroleum and natural gas Rameswar Teli on Friday inaugurated a state-of-the-art solid waste management project at Lekai in the Thakurthan area on the outskirts of Dibrugarh town.

Speaking at the inaugural programme, Teli said, “The first solid waste management project in Assam has been inaugurated in Dibrugarh. It was a historic day for the people of Dibrugarh because, for many years, the residents here have faced problems due to no proper garbage disposal unit in Dibrugarh.”

“Garbage was dumped in the Maijan area near Brahmaputra river in Dibrugarh which causes pollution in the entire area. Due to the steps that were taken by the Dibrugarh and Lahowal MLAs, the project has been successfully inaugurated,” he said.

Union minister Teli lauded the efforts of Dibrugarh deputy commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha for the successful inauguration of the project.

Built at a cost of Rs 75.03 crore on a 28.3-hectare plot of land under the Assam Urban Infrastructure Investment Program (AUIIP), the mega facility has a capacity to convert 100 metric tonnes per day (TPD) of waste into compost.

Moreover, diesel, granules and plastics will also be produced from the plant.

According to an official estimate, the 22 municipal wards of the town produce around 80 metric tonnes of solid waste every day.

These wastes till now were being dumped in an unscientific manner at the Maijan ghat along the Brahmaputra river flowing beside Dibrugarh town.

In 2017, the state government had started the work of the project at Lekai, 5-km away from Dibrugarh town under the Assam Urban Infrastructure Investment Program.
