Digboi: The pro-talk faction of ULFA has pledged to extend moral support to the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) in the interest of the greater Assamese community and the state of Assam, said AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi.
Gogoi held a meeting with ULFA leaders at the Patkai Resort in Digboi on Sunday morning before attending a formal merger event later in the afternoon at the Digboi Luit Silpi Samaj.
Gogoi noted that not only the pro-talk faction of ULFA but also people from the broader Assamese community across Assam have shown goodwill towards the AJP. This support aims to protect the state’s sanctity and promote a sense of fraternity and peaceful coexistence.
“Currently, there is a wave of support across the state, with people increasingly aligning themselves with our regional party,” Gogoi claimed.
In the afternoon, several individuals from various locations in the Tinsukia district officially joined the AJP during the merger event in Digboi.
Among those joining the AJP was Gitartho Saikia, a youth leader and son of Diganta Saikia, a senior AGP leader and State Vice President of the AGP, along with his supporters.
When contacted, Suren Phukan, the incumbent BJP MLA, expressed skepticism about the shift in political allegiance.
He said the BJP maintains a strong base in his constituency and criticized those who frequently change their political affiliations for personal gain.
“The BJP remains the ultimate choice for the people of Assam, and only a proven leader like Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma can meet the aspirations of the state’s people,” Phukan added.
