The coordination committee of tribal organisations (CCOTO) on Monday said they have planned to launch an indefinite economic blockade in Assam against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).

CCOTO is a conglomeration of 24 tribal organisations in Assam.

Aditya Khaklari, chief coordinator of the organisation said, “We will oppose the CAB tooth and nail…we are planning to launch an indefinite economic blockade in Assam opposing the bill.”

He stated that CAB will not only change the demography of Assam but it will also pose as a threat to the indigenous people of Northeast in general and Assam in particular.

Khaklari said Narendra Modi led BJP government is playing with the people of the country.

“They are creating religious differences by differentiating between Hindus and Muslims in CAB. It’s only their vote bank politics,” said Khaklari.

He said that his organisation has been meeting leaders of different political parties.

“We will keep meeting leaders and get their support in opposing the CAB,” said Khaklari.

Meanwhile, a delegation of North East Student Organisation (NESO) on Monday called on Samajwadi party MP Javed Ali Khan in New Delhi and sought for his party’s support in opposing the Bill.

The NESO delegation comprises Samujjal Bhattacharya, Dipanka Nath and Samuel Jyrwa.
