Assam swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika on Thursday became the first Assamese person to successfully cross the Catalina Channel.
To achieve the feat, Hazarika started his journey from the United States and swum across the Catalina Channel to reach Mexico.
He completed the 80 km journey within 10 hours and 59 minutes.
The remarkable swimming journey was faced with many challenges for Hazarika as the Catalina Channel is home to numerous variety of marine life.
Hazarika dedicated his remarkable feat in the memory of Abhi-Neel.
He also became the first Assamese to swim 29 km in the 33 km long English Channel.
He started swimming at the age of two-and-a-half and crossed the 800-metre Dighalipukhuri in Guwahatiwhen he was four years old.
At five, he swam the length of Joysagar Lake in Sivasagar, also considered to be the largest man-made lake in India.
The swimmer trained under ace body builder Mahadev Deka.
Hazarika has got as many as sixty eight national and six international gold medals.
