Eastern range deputy inspector general of police (DIG) V Siva Prasad has ordered a fresh investigation into a police sub-inspector being caught red-handed with four rounds of live cartridges of a .9mm pistol at the Rowriah Airport in Jorhat recently.
The DIG, expressing dissatisfaction over the way the investigation had been conducted and the SI let off.
Four rounds of cartridges were recovered from the suitcase of Utpal Das, sub-inspector (probation) from Majuli when his luggage was being scanned at the airport.
Das was to board a plane from here to Guwahati.

Security forces immediately hauled Das to the Rowriah police outpost, where he was booked under Section 25 (1A) of the Arms Act, 1959 and a case registered in this regard.
He also replaced the investigating officer SI Jugeswar Dehingia at the Rowriah police outpost with Pulibar circle inspector Sushil Kumar Dutta.
The DIG said that the investigation should have been incompetently conducted and a valid reason should be found as to why sub inspector Das, who had been booked under the Arms Act, was later released.
The accused had told the investigating officer and security forces at the airport that he had placed the cartridges of his service revolver in his suitcase by mistake.
A further inquiry had revealed that Das had deposited his service rifle with 10 rounds of ammunition at the Majuli police station.
