The Assam government has decided to convert some madrassas in the state into secondary schools while closing down the others.
State education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has asked the education department to prepare a cabinet memorandum for executing the decision taken to close down the government-run madrassas.
The education department has accordingly sought details from the districts about the number of madrassas and sanctioned teachers along with the number of positions lying vacant.
Once every detail is availed, then the department will place it before the state cabinet, which will take the final call.
Minister Sarma had earlier declared that teachers of these soon-tobe-closed madrassas are likely to be adjusted in other schools or in the same institution if it is converted into a secondary school.
It may be mentioned here that there are 401 provincialized madrassas in Assam.
According to officials at the State Madrassa Education Board, Assam, (SMEBA), there are four provincialized Arabic colleges, 14 title madrassas, 133 senior madrassas and 250 pre-senior madrassas in the state.
