The Rabindranath Tagore University (RTU) in Assam’s Hojai district will begin post-graduate courses in six disciplines from the 2020-21 academic session.

The university will begin post-graduate courses in English, Bengali, political science, botany, chemistry and zoology.

Vice-chancellor of RTU, Amalendu Chakrabarty said that continuous efforts by the university administration to introduce PG courses have finally yielded results.

Social worker Kamal Dutta said, “The state government has finally allowed the university to begin PG courses, which will benefit students of the district immensely.”

“The university has now gained its full stature,” he said.

The university was formerly the Hojai College established in 1964 so that local students could avail of quality higher education without having to move out of their native place.

The Assam government by an order in 2017 upgraded the college to the RTU to accelerate the pace of education in the district.

Students have also expressed their satisfaction with the development.

“We are glad that the RTU will start PG courses in six disciplines. The state government will finally have to allow the university to introduce similar courses in all disciplines to improve the education system,” said a student of the university.
