The police in Assam’s Jorhat district rescued at least 24 dogs late on Thursday night from the grasp of animal traffickers.
The dogs were being smuggled to Nagaland and were rescued from Chaguri area in Jorhat district of Assam.
The dogs, which were of local breed, were tied with ropes and sacks and caged.
One person has also been arrested by the police.
The rescued dogs were meant for being smuggled to Nagaland soon.
The arrested person has been identified as Doku Doley.
“Police rescued 24 desi (local breed) dogs in Jorhat from being illegally smuggled to Nagaland. The dogs were tied with ropes and sacks. One person has also been arrested,” said Jorhat DSP Mamoni Hazarika.
Notably, the Kohima Bench of Gauhati High Court, in November, stayed Nagaland government’s blanket ban on sale of dog meat in markets and restaurants.
In July, the Nagaland government had banned commercial import, trading and sale of dog meat.
