The Assam police has arrested two persons in connection with the clash that broke out between the police and locals during an eviction drive at Gorukhuti area near Sipajhar in Darrang district on Thursday.

The arrests have been made by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Assam Police.

The arrested persons have been identified as Hasmat Ali and Shan Mahmood.

According to reports, both the arrested individuals have been kept at the Sipajhar Police Station.

The duo has been arrested for allegedly inciting violence during the eviction drive on Thursday.

At least 2 persons were killed in police firing and over 20 people including 9 police personnel sustained injuries in the clash.

Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has alleged that the Popular Front of India (PFI), an extremist Islamic organisation, is behind the violence.

The Assam government has also ordered a judicial inquiry into the clashes.

Meanwhile, the Assam Congress has launched an all-out attack on the BJP-led state government over the incident.

The Congress has been demanding immediate transfer of Darrang DC and SP for a “fair and transparent” inquiry into the incident.

Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah, in fact, accused the state government of ruling the state with the “might of the bullet”.
