Eminent Assamese poet and Sahitya Academy Award winner Sananta Tanty has passed away. 

Tanty breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. 

69-year-old Sananta Tanty passed away in the wee hours of Thursday. 

Tanty’s sudden demise is considered to be a big loss for Assamese literary fraternity.

Tanty was born in 1952 at Kalibari Tea Estate in Karimganj district of Assam. 

The family of Sananta Tanty faced massive financial crisis during his treatment. 

As the family is not being able to clear the expenses, Tanty’s body still remains at the morgue of AIIMS. 

Meanwhile, the Assam government reportedly is yet to establish contact with the family of the deceased poet.

Tanty was awarded with Sahitya Akademi in 2018.  

He was suffering from prolonged illness since long and was under treatment in the national capital. 

Tanty received the 2018 Sahitya Akademi Award for “Kailoir Dinto Amar Hobo” (Tomorrow Will be Ours), a collection of his poems.
