A student of Dibrugarh University in Assam has tested positive for COVID-19. 

The COVID positive DU student recently had returned from South Africa. 

With all states and union territories on alert over spread of Omicron variant of COVID-19, sample of the student has been sent for genome sequencing. 

Genome sequencing of the COVID positive student will be done at North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST) in Jorhat, Assam.

Meanwhile, the student has been kept in isolation at the Jokai Covid care centre. 

The COVID positive Dibrugarh University student studies at the Pharmaceutical Sciences department. 

Notably, the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has breached Northeast. 

The first Omicron case of the region was detected in Manipur on Monday.

A 48-year-old man, who recently had returned from Tanzania has been tested positive for Omicron in Manipur. 

The person is currently being treated at the JNIMS Hospital in Imphal. 

Moreover, three more family members of the man have also tested positive for COVID-19.
