The assault on a journalist in North Lakhimpur by police during lockdown has been strongly condemned by North Lakhimpur Press Club on Saturday.

The North Lakhimpur Press Club held an emergent meeting on Saturday to discuss the district authority’s inaction following the police misbehaviour on journalist Rajesh Rathi.

Rathi is a correspondent of Hindi daily Pruvanchal Prahari.

He was assaulted by police personnel on July 8 while he was on duty.

In a letter to the deputy commissioner of Lakhimpur, the North Lakhimpur Press Club said it would not cover any government news for a week and it would inform the district press union if the Lakhimpur district administration does not take any necessary action within 24 hours.

This was stated by the president of North Lakhimpur Press Club, Sailen Baruah and secretary Karuna Krishna Nath.

Total lockdown has been imposed in seven districts of the state including Lakhimpur in the wake of rising Covid19 cases.

The lockdown restrictions in the Lakhimpur district came into effect from July 7 and will remain enforced till further orders.
