Assam: No one engages on polygamy by choice, says AIUDF legislator

Guwahati: As the bill to ban polygamy in Assam, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) legislator Aminul Islam said that no one is interested in polygamy by choice.

Speaking on the issue, the MLA from the Mankachar constituency claimed that an examination of the bill is needed.

He claimed that in Assam people do not willingly go for polygamy. “To make a proper statement on the bill, we will need to check and study it”, he added.

Reacting further on the bill, Sivasagar MLA, Akhil Gogoi claimed that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma decided to introduce the bill to get attention from the national media.

Gogoi also claimed that the Assam CM was doing so as he (Himanta Biswa Sarma) wanted to be the prime minister.

Further, he claimed that the government led by the BJP, always targets the minority in Assam.

It may be mentioned that the bill to ban polygamy in Assam will be tabled during the ongoing budget session.
