As the country is under a grave crisis due to the threat posed by COVID-19, the National Cadet Corps (NCC) of Assam’s Lakhimpur district has been extending a yeoman’s service to the society during the lockdown.
Lead by Commanding Officer Col. Jasbir Singh Cheema, the cadets of 72 Assam Girls (Independent) Company and boy cadets of 8 Assam NCC Battalion have been assisting the civil and police administration in maintaining social distancing at various key installations in North Lakhimpur since May 11.
The NCC boys and girls have been offering regular services at SBI North Lakhimpur branch, Gramin Vikas Bank and at District Library where large applicants queue as the district employment exchange office was shifted temporarily there to ease large gatherings.

Besides assisting the civil administration and the people by wearing face masks in public and maintaining social distancing for lockdown, the NCC boys and girls under the regular guidance by CO Cheema, have made masks and distributed them free of cost to the needy.
They are monitoring temperature of customers entering banks with IR thermometer and sanitizing their hands.
The cadets also offered helps in filling various forms for illiterate customers of the banks to avail various services.
They are also assisting the common public in downloading the Aarogya Setu App in their mobile phones to keep track of coronavirus cases.
There are 49 NCC cadets from North Lakhimpur who have been volunteering as Covid Warriors for this daily service which includes 25 girl cadets and 24 boy cadets.
The cadets are performing their duties with utmost dedication from 9 am till 4 pm under all weather.
The NCC boys and girls in North Lakhimpur are also been connected by Zoom App so that cadets could complete syllabuses of NCC, college and post videos of community service during the lockdown as a part of nation’s fight against COVID-19.
It may be mentioned that the 72 Assam Girls (Independent) Company of NCC has been enrolling girls from Lakhimpur and Dhemaji since 1963.
Presently it has cadets from various colleges of these two districts.
The NCC has a three year programme for college going girls and two years programme for school going girls.
Besides teaching the cadets about army subjects, it aims to make these cadets the future leaders of the country.
