Police on Saturday arrested Dr Siddhi Prasad Deori and his wife, Mitali Konwar Deori from Raha in Nagaon.

While Dr Deori is a Dibrugarh-based physician, his wife Mitali Konwar Deori is the principal of Moran College.

After five days of intense search operation, the couple landed in the police dragnet.

GP Singh, additional director general of police (law and order), Assam confirmed the arrest of the couple in a tweet.

He tweeted: “The couple, wanted for causing burn injury to the domestic help child in Dibrugarh have been arrested by Assam Police at Nagaon.”

Dr Deori poured hot water on a 12-year-old minor when he was sleeping on a floor of their residence.

The minor had been working as a domestic help in their residence for the last one year.

Dibrugarh superintendent of police Prateek Vijay Kumar Thube said, “Dr Deori and his wife, Mitali Konwar have been arrested from Nagaon this evening.”

“Nagaon Police arrested the couple from the district. We are tracking him and shared information with Nagaon Police and finally the couple has been arrested.”

Earlier, Dibrugarh Police arrested the son and daughter of the couple in connection with the case.

Several organisations staged protests against the barbaric incident and demanded stringent punishment against the couple.
