Today is Christmas.

Nagaon, the town in central Assam has been celebrating the day every year with much pomp and glory along with the rest of the world.

But this year, the Nagaon Baptist Church has refrained from celebrating Christmas.

Reason – in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The Nagaon Baptist Church has curtailed several programmes usually held on the occasion of Christmas.

The Nagaon Baptist Church was established in 1846 by Miles Bronson, considered as one of the pioneers in conserving and promoting the Assamese language.

However, the Nagaon Baptist Church feels that the CAA is a threat to Assamese ethnicity and language.

As such it has decided to curtail the Christmas celebrations this year.

Every year a cultural procession is taken out as a pre-Christmas celebration and December 25 is celebrated amid much gaiety.

However, this year all these programmes have been cancelled in protest against the CAA.
