Nine Assam police constables and two youths were injured in a clash at Jengkha in West Karbi Anglong on Wednesday night.

Sources said the police constables were injured when an irate mob attacked the Jangkha police patrol post following the arrest of a drunken youth.

The police arrested the youth identified as Kharsing Bey for allegedly creating a nuisance in an inebriated state at a cultural event organized on the occasion of 72nd Village Defence Party (VDP) foundation day at Jengkha.

Later, at around 11 pm a group of youth gheraoed the police patrol post demanding the immediate release of Bey.

The group of youths allegedly vandalized the police patrol outpost and damaged police vehicles, several motorcycles on the premises.

In the attack, nine police personnel were injured. The police resorted to firing to control the situation in which at least two youths were injured.

The injured youths have been identified as Bhisma Teron (15) and Maheswar Engti (19).

They are being treated in Diphu Medical College & Hospital.
