The district administration of Assam’s Darrang in association with district police on Thursday conducted a major raid against illegal saw mills.

This racket has recently become active in some remote bordering areas allegedly taking the opportunity of the ignorance and corrupt attitude of a section of officials and staff of the Mangaldai Forest Beat under N K Forest Division, Rongiya.

Operational team led by executive magistrate Navadeep Changmai accompanied by officer in charge of Panbari Police Outpost Nipon Baruah and his staff later joined by staff Mangaldai Forest Beat raided three sites – two at Borjhar and other at Bherbheribill village under the outpost and evicted all the illegally operated mills, seized sets machineries, generators, wood cutting blades etc besides huge quantity of timber logs and sawn timber planks.

The successful operations which lasted several hours have also managed to identify several persons including one Abdul Hai of Borjhar involved in the illegal activities against whom executive magistrate Changmai wants initiating necessary legal action by the Forest department.

“I have already asked the beat officer to initiate legal procedure against the persons identified to be involved in these unlawful acts,” said Changmai while talking to Northeast Now.

“On the basis of the public complaints we are planning to make more such raids in near future too,” executive magistrate Changmai further stated.
