The district administration has ordered closure of Jorhat’s main market at Baghmibar Nilomoni Phukan Road, popularly known as Newville Road, due to violation of Covid19 protocol by the fish, fruit and vegetable vendors.

The market will remain closed for the next seven days.

The order issued by Jorhat deputy commissioner Ashok Kumar Barman stated that in view of Covid19 pandemic and to contain the spread of the pandemic in the district the vegetable and fruit vendors will not be allowed to open shops at Newville Road till June 1.

In the morning, DC Barman and new Jorhat superintendent of police Ankur Jain inspected the road to take stock of the situation after many people complaining on the social media about heavy rush of people, many thronging the place in vehicles to buy fish, vegetables or fruits, thereby leading to a chaotic situation.

Deputy commissioner Barman after inspecting the site told newspersons that the district administration was thinking of shifting the vendors to other open areas in different groups to prevent this kind of disorderly and disarray situation in the area.
