In a big setback and a major embarrassment for the Congress party in Assam, its lone winner in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, Sajal Kumar Sinha has joined the BJP.

Sajal Sinha quitting Congress and coming to the folds of the saffron party comes just two days after the results of the BTC polls were declared.

Sajal Sinha joined the BJP in the presence of NEDA Convenor and Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Lok Sabha MP Pallab Lochan Das at Hotel Lily in Guwahati.

Speaking to the media Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “There is nothing surprising in it. Not on Sajal, I have been getting calls from many Congress leaders wanting to join the BJP and many will eventually join us.”

Meanwhile, Sajal Sinha said that he took the decision of joining the BJP keeping in mind the suggestions of his supporters.

“I am duty-bound to serve the people of my constituency. The people supported me to win the elections. Being the lone Congress MCLA in the BTC would not bring any development to my constituency,” said Sinha.

Notably, Sajal Sinha won on a Congress ticket from the Srirampur seat in the recently-held Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections.

The swearing in ceremony of the council members would take place in Kokrajhar on Tuesday.
