The much-awaited Out Patient Department (OPD) and other services started in Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital.

Doctors from North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital have started attending OPD and casualty duties of emergency services at the Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital from October 1 following the announcement by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and health minister Keshab Mahanta during their visit on September 30.

Though the services of Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital have started with a 30-bed casualty ward and 70 ICUs, the entire set-up has no security system.

Huge structures and facilities are seen without any security system leaving the staff and other set-ups vulnerable to any external threat.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) visited LMCH in August this year and found some deficiencies like the number of faculties, size of casualty ward and incomplete buildings.

For that reason, the NMC disallowed admission to MBBS courses at LMCH for the academic session of 2021-22.

However, the LMCH has become ready with the required faculties and other infrastructures for the next visit of the NMC.

According to Dr Nikhil Kakati, additional superintendent, the LMCH is functional and ready for enrolment of 100 students for the MBBS course from this year.

Talking to this correspondent, Dr Kakati said necessary rectifications have been made with the completion of the installation of amenities and construction of buildings to meet the NMC requirements.

The 200-bed North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital at Chabati has already been amalgamated with LMCH with all existing medical staff.

The erstwhile NLCH is being converted to a Covid care hospital.
