In order to encourage youths towards football and keep them away from drugs, the Indian Army organized a football tournament at Digboi in Upper Assam.
The Indian Army in collaboration with Oil India Ltd organised a football tournament – Tinsukia Cup – at Digboi from January 27 to February 15.
A total of 16 teams from areas of Kakopathar, Makum, Digboi, Pengri, Margherita and Tipong battled it out for the coveted Tinsukia Cup.
The final was played out between Digboi FC and Margherita TSC.
Digboi FC emerged as winners of the tournament.
This time it was playtime for a social cause.
The theme of the tournament was ‘Say No to Drugs, Yes to Football – 1000 Goals against Drugs.’
It gelled with ‘Khelo India’ initiative taken up by the government of India and provided the opportunity to the budding talents to showcase their skills and wean them away from the drug menace.
The thrilling final match was witnessed by several locals from the area.
The Guest of Honour, Major General Sanjeev Chauhan, General Officer Commanding (GOC), DAO Division, felicitated the players and handed over the trophy to the winning team.
The winning team – Digboi FC – was also handed over a cheque of Rs 50,000 as the first prize.
