Assam Police on Saturday arrested a student of the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G) on charges of raping a student of the premier institute.

Police officials said the accused allegedly raped the student on March 28 night when a cultural event organized as a part of the Holi celebration was going on.

The arrested student has been identified as Utsab Kadam, a student of the department of Chemistry, who hails from Mumbai.

A case (53/21) under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at Amingaon police outpost against the accused student.

Police also apprehended four other students of the institute for questioning in connection with the incident.

According to a police official, the statement of the victim was recorded on Saturday.

The IITG authorities, in a statement, said the institute had conducted an internal inquiry into the incident and submitted a report on Friday.

According to reports, the victim hails from Gujarat.
