Kanwaldeep Singh Sindhu, one of the key suspects in connection with a kidnapping case in Guwahati killed in police firing while he “tried to flee police custody” on Friday.

Singh was arrested from the Purna Laharijan area along Assam-Nagaland interstate border by a team of Guwahati Police.

A team Karbi Anglong police also assisted in his arrest.

The incident took place on NH 36 alongside the Daldali Reserve Forest, when Kanwaldeep Singh reportedly “snatched a service pistol of a police officer” while being taken to Diphu for transit remand.

Firing a shot, Singh jumped out of the vehicle and “tried to flee” inside the forest.

The police then fired in “retaliation” and Singh was severely injured with multiple bullet shots. Singh was declared brought dead in the hospital.

Singh was the prime accused in the Kidnapping of Ajit Das, a leasee of Guwahati Railway Station parking who was abducted from his home in the Kalibari neighbourhood near Guwahati Railway Station on June 23.

Das was however rescued on June 28.

A total of six people have been nabbed by police in connection with the case.

Earlier, a constable of Fancy Bazaar police outpost, arrested in connection with the case was also shot at while trying to “flee police custody” in Guwahati.

Sidhu is an inspector in the Railway Protection Special Force and was under suspension since 2013.

Singh was allegedly involved in a series of criminal activities including kidnapping, illegal firearm smuggling and drug trafficking during his service period.
