Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi on Tuesday released a book titled ‘Principles and Practice of Oncology’ at Raj Bhavan in Guwahati.

Speaking at the book release function, Governor Mukhi said that there have been significant changes in the paradigm of cancer diagnosis and treatment of the disease in a couple of decades.

Hailing Dr. B Borooah Cancer Institute which has published the book, the Governor said that the institute being one of the oldest cancer centres has immensely contributed to the prevention, early detection, treatment and palliation of cancer in the Northeast.

This book will also benefit students and practicing clinicians across the country, the Governor added.

Mukhi also expressed happiness that the Department of Atomic Energy has taken over the Institute as a unit of Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai in 2017 and steps have been initiated for massive infrastructure development.

Also, at the initiative of the Department of Atomic Energy and Tata Memorial Centre will screen two lakh women for common cancer in the Kamrup District of Assam with the help of Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mohatsav celebrations.

Expressing his happiness over the development made in the field of cancer treatment over the last couple of decades Prof. Mukhi said that enough has been done in the field of oncology.

Advanced researches are being carried out. New medical innovations and state-of-the-art treatment have really enhanced the success rates and brought down the mortality rate in cancer.

He also urged the oncologists and research scientists to work on more books on cancer to educate people on how to detect cancer in the early stage and how to check its recurrence by adopting a healthy lifestyle.

The Governor lauded and congratulated the efforts of BBCI and said that there is a paucity of medical textbooks published by Indian writers and the book published by Director, BBCI Dr. Amal Ch Kataki and faculty members has embarked on a vision to bring out a book to enrich the knowledge in the field of oncology throughout the country and beyond.
