A German company Inrose Lackner and a consultant Arkitechno have been roped by Assam government for upgrading State’s inland transport sector.

The company prepared an Integrated Strategic Development Plan(ISDP) comprising of two modules and has submitted both the modules to the Assam Government. One of the modules tells about the feasibility of the project and the other is for Assam Transport Strategy 2035.

Arkitechno has prepared an assessment plan of the project .

The project known as Assam Inland Water Transport Project costs around US $ 150 million and will be funded by the World Bank.

The project consists of several components like development of a long term strategic plan for IWT in Assam and institutional and capacity building, improvement of ferry services, acquisition of goods such as navigation equipment, vessels and crafts, construction of terminals, setting up systems for project implementation, logistics, etc, reports The Assam Tribune.

An apex body known as the Assam Inland Water Development Society (AIWTD Society) which is also a registered society, has been set up under the transport department of the State government.
