The Assam government will table a bill on the closure of all government-run madrassas and Sanskrit tols during the upcoming winter session of the state assembly.
The government approved a proposal to close down all madrassas and Sanskrit tols (schools) in the state during a cabinet meeting on Sunday.
Assam chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal chaired the cabinet meeting.
the winter session of the Assam legislative assembly will commence on December 28.

A report quoted state parliamentary affairs minister, Chandra Mohan Patowary as saying that the existing laws governing madrassas and Sanskrit tols will be abolished.
“We will introduce a bill for the same in the next assembly session,” he said.
State education minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier said that the state government has been spending Rs 260 crores to run 610 madrassas across Assam.
Sarma had said that the government intends to convert the madrassas into institutes imparting general modern education.
The government will meanwhile, spend Rs 300 crores so as to ensure that the present teaching and non-teaching staff of these madrassas retain their jobs.
