Former principal-in-charge of Kampur College, Hirendra Nath Sarma has been arrested by the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance cell, led by investigating officer, deputy superintendent of police, Amrit Kalita.
After his arrest on Monday, Sarma was produced before the court of Special Judge on the same day and was remanded to police custody for 3 days.
A probe was initiated on September 12 in 2018, on the basis of a petition lodged by the principal of Kampur College in Nagaon, Harekrishna Deva Sarmah, against the former principal-in-charge.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Sarma misappropriated Assam government funds and UGC funds allocated to Kampur College in different heads.
He misappropriated government funds allocated for the construction of the indoor stadium (UGC fund), books, journals and equipment for library (from UGC fund) and infrastructure development (fund provided by Assam govt.).
The former principal-in-charge also misappropriated funds for the purchase of GIS and Remote Sensing for Geography department, construction of Septic tank, and floodlighting of Volley Ball/ Basketball court without carrying out any of these works.
It came to light that he misappropriated a large sum of government funds amounting to Rs. 34,64,164.00 provided by UGC and Assam government.
An FIR was lodged against Sarma with the government’s approval Vide U.O. No-CMS(V)42/2018/34 on December 4, 2018, and thereafter a Vigilance Case No. 02/19U/S-406/409/420/468/471 IPC R/W Section 13(2) Amendment 2018 P.C. Act was registered.
