A massive fire that broke out in a gas pipeline belonging to Assam Gas Company Limited (AGCL) at Baruah Chari-Ali in upper Assam’s Jorhat on Sunday evening triggered panic in the area.
People out to see the Diwali lights scared as flame rose up to about 20 feet.
Several fire-tenders were pressed into service and firemen were engaged for over one and half hours to bring it under control.
Though the exact cause of the fire could not be immediately ascertained a policeman said that leakage of gas from the pipe was suspected.
Investigation is on, said a police official.
