Amid Mahanavami festivities in Assam’s Darrang district, a fire broke out at Mangaldai daily bazar on Monday night.

The fire damaged property of a wholesale unit of packaged consumable goods like biscuits, chocolate, chips etc.

However, a major disaster could be averted due to the alert night chowkidar and timely action of the fire safety team.

Latif Ali, one of the night chowkidars of the market while talking to Northeast Now informed, at around 9:30 pm, he first spotted fire flames and smoke in the closed whole sale unit run by one Sanath Bose.

It was a rented room of one Santiranjan Saha as allotted to him by Municipal authority.

He immediately contacted with market management committee and police.

Two vehicles of the fire safety team rushed to the spot and fortunately managed to control the fire before it could spread to other business establishments in the thickly constructed and congested market area.

Earlier, the incident created a hue and cry among the owners of other businesses establishments.

The value of property damaged is yet to be assessed till filing of this report.

Meanwhile, preliminary police investigation has observed the cause of the fire to be due to electric short circuit.
