Differences seem to have cropped-up between allies in Assam – the BJP and Axom Gana Parishad (AGP) over seat sharing.

AGP leaders on Monday staged a walkout from a meeting between both the parties, which was convened to discuss seat sharing arrangement.

A crucial meeting was convened at the official residence of Assam State BJP president Ranjit Dass to discuss seat sharing between the two parties.

However, following reported ‘ignorance’ by the BJP leaders on the demands of the AGP, the party’s leaders decided to walkout of the meeting.

Besides, Assam State BJP president Ranjit Dass, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma were also present during the meeting.

The AGP was represented by State Minister and AGP president Atul Bora and Keshav Mahanta.

Notably, the AGP has been demanding a total of 40 seats for it to contest in the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections.

Later, AGP leader and State Minister Keshav Mahanta said that a final decision on seat sharing would be taken after discussions with the BJP’s central leadership.

On the other hand, the BJP reportedly is demanding at least 7 seats, which the AGP had won in the 2016 Assam Assembly Elections.

A final decision on seat sharing between the BJP and the AGP is likely to be taken on March 4.

Keshav Mahanta further termed Monday’s meeting as part of preliminary discussions.

Later on Monday, AGP leaders sat for a meeting among themselves to discuss their poll prospects in the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections.
