A professor of Dibrugarh University has been removed from his position after charges of sexual harassment have been brought against him.

A female research scholar has brought charges of sexual harassment against Satyakam Borthakur, a professor at the department of Assamese in Dibrugarh University.

Borthakur was also serving as the chairperson of the Centre of Studies in Journalism and Mass Communication in Dibrugarh University.

A notification, issued by the registrar of Dibrugarh University on April 28, 2021, says “in view of certain allegations of harassment” the “chairmanship” of Borthakur has been “ceased” and in his place Prof. P.K. Gogoi of the department of education is appointed as the chairperson of the said department with immediate effect.

On Saturday, Borthakur resigned from his position as the chairman of the Centre of Studies in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Dibrugarh University authorities ordered Borthakur to step down from the chairmanship of the Centre of Studies in Journalism and Mass Communication after receiving a complaint and a witness statement from a female research scholar and a female employee.

The female research scholar also filed an FIR against Borthakur at Dibrugarh police station.

The research scholar lodged a complaint with the internal complaints committee of the University accusing the professor of the Assamese department of sexual harassment.

The research scholar in her complaint alleged that she was molested by the senior faculty member, who is also her research supervisor, at his cabin in the department of Assamese.
