The Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) at Sonapur near Guwahati in Assam has been declared as a containment zone.
The LNIPE has been converted into a containment zone following detection of COVID-19 cases among the students and teachers of the institute.
The LNIPE will remain as a containment zone for the next 14 days.
The status of containment zone will remain in force for institute from Thursday (April 8) till April 21.
The Kamrup-Metro district administration issued a notification late on Wednesday night, converting the LNIPE into a containment zone.
“In view of detection of COVID-19 positive cases at LNIPE, Sonapur under Kamrup Metropolitan District, in the interest of the the maintenance of public hygiene and prevent further spread of COVID-19 virus amongst the teaching staff and students, the entire area of the LNIPE premises is declared as a CONTAINMENT ZONE for the next 14 days,” Kamrup-Metro Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu stated in a notification.
“…the Circle Officer, Sonapur Revenue Circle is directed to seal the area immediately,” the notification further read.
Notably, as many as 104 COVID-19 positive cases were detected in and around Guwahati on Wednesday.
Assam on Wednesday recorded a massive spike in its COVID-19 caseload following detection of 195 positive cases.
The number of active COVID-19 cases in Assam has shot up to 847.
There has been a gradual rise in COVID-19 cases in Assam.
A total of 615 COVID-19 cases have been detected in Assam since April 1.

Health officials in Assam fear that COVID-19 cases in the State may rise further if COVID-19 protocols are not followed sincerely.
Notably, during the course of Assam Assembly elections, COVID-19 protocols and other social distancing norms were violated rampantly.
