The Assam Congress has inducted Naiwrita Joy Shukla into the party on Tuesday, effectively as Sushmita Dev’s replacement in the Barak Valley.

Naiwrita Joy Shukla is the granddaughter of former Congress MP Lalit Mohan Suklabaidya from Karimganj constituency.

“We welcome daughter of Barak Valley – Naiwrita Joy Shukla to our party,” said Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah said.

After formally joining the Congress party, Naiwrita said that she always wanted to join the party and had expressed her desire before state party chief Bhupen Borah.

“I always wanted to join the party. Families should stick together even during worst of times,” Naiwrita Joy Shukla said.

Notably, Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah had said that the party would bring in a replacement for Sushmita Dev within fifteen days.

Sushmita Dev joined the TMC in the presence of senior party leaders Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O’Brien in Kolkata on Monday.

Several Congress leaders, including Kapil Sibal, were shocked at Sushmita Dev’s resignation from the Congress.
