Congress MLA from the Raha constituency, Sashi Kanta Das was suspended from the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee on Friday for his alleged “anti-party activities”.

As per the APCC, Das was suspended on disciplinary grounds with immediate effect.

Earlier on December 20, the APCC had issued a show-cause notice to Das after he had “extended” support to the BJP-led government in the state.

The Assam Congress gave him a 24-hour deadline to MLA Sashi Kanta Das for responding to the show cause notice but he did not respond.

There were reports that Das was prepared to join the BJP.

Sashi Kanta Das, however, denied the claims stating that he had no such intentions.

He said that he had met Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over certain development-related projects in his constituency.

He clarified that he was “still a member of the Congress” party.

“Meeting the CM of the state does not mean I will join the BJP. I met him because I want development in my constituency,” Assam Congress MLA Sashi Kanta Das said.
