Assam’s controversial Congress MP Sanjay Singh on Tuesday resigned from the Rajya Sabha as well as the party. He will join the BJP on Wednesday.
“I have resigned from the Congress, as well as Rajya Sabha,” Singh said, adding that he has left Congress because “leadership is zero in the party”.
Despite strong opposition by members of the Assam Pradesh Congress, Singh was elected as a Rajya Sabha member from Assam in 2015.
After being elected as a Rajya Sabha member from Assam, Singh did not bother to visit Guwahati, and work for the development of the state.
“I have decided to join the BJP because I support Modi’s campaign sabka sath sabka vikas,” he said. Singh has been with the Congress since 1984.

His wife Ameeta Singh, who was the chairperson of All India Professionals’ Congress in UP, also resigned from the party, and is also scheduled to join the BJP.
“My decision of leaving will not impact Congress in any way,” Singh said, adding that whatever has happened in Congress in 15 years hasn’t happened before.
The veteran leader said he took the decision to leave Congress after thinking a lot about it.
Singh has been in the BJP earlier. He was once elected to Lok Sabha on BJP ticket in 90s. He is a member of the royal family of Amethi and commands considerable political influence in the area.
He had unsuccessfully contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Sultanpur. BJP’s Maneka Gandhi had registered victory in Sultanpur.
Sanjay Singh was an accused in the murder of the badminton champion Syed Modi.
